					</table><p>A globalized supply chain of solar photovoltaics (PV) helped countries save $67 billion in solar module production costs until 2020, according to a new study published by scientists from New York’s <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stony Brook University</a>.</p>
<p>Between 2008 and 2020, of the $67 billion saved by the global solar PV supply chain, $24 billion are in savings for the U.S., $7 billion for Germany, and $36 billion for China.</p>
<p>Titled ‘Quantifying the cost savings of global solar photovoltaic supply chains,’ the study is published in the scientific journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nature</a>.</p>
<p>The team of researchers, including Gang He, assistant professor in the Department of Technology and Society in the University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, stressed the importance of solar energy for the world to achieve a future with low carbon.</p>
<p>The researchers highlight that while countries worldwide are introducing new policies to bolster domestic production, certain policies like imposing import tariffs could hamper efforts to accelerate the deployment of renewables like solar.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, the U.S. <a href="https://mercomindia.com/us-extends-solar-tariffs-exempts-bifacial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">extended</a> the tariffs imposed on imported crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules for four more years. Bifacial panels, which absorb light on both sides, are most common in utility-scale solar projects.</p>
<p>Lead author of the study and assistant professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at <a href="https://www.gwu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">George Washington University</a>, John Helveston, said, “What this study tells us is if we’re serious about fighting climate change, policymakers need to implement policies that promote collaboration across global value chains regarding scaling up low-carbon energy technologies. While this study focuses on one industry — solar — the effects we describe here are applicable to other renewable energy industries, such as wind energy and electric vehicles.”</p>
<p>However, the study found that if any of the above three countries had adopted strong trade policies that limited cross-border learning, the costs of solar panels in 2020 would leap by 107% in the U.S., 83% in Germany, and 54% higher in China.</p>
<p>The team points out that import tariffs could lead to an unprecedented production cost surge. If stringent nationalistic policies limiting the free flow of goods, talent, and capital continue to be implemented, solar panel costs will skyrocket by the end of the current decade.</p>
<p>According to the estimates revealed by the team in the research, unit solar module costs in 2030 would be approximately 20-30% higher in each country if transit is manufactured domestically compared to a future with globalized supply chains.</p>
<p>Gang He noted, “Nationalistic policies hurt every country and risk missing pressing climate targets. International climate policy benefits from a globalized low-carbon value chain; however, it is important to introduce complementary policies to mitigate welfare distribution effects and potential impacts on technological crowding-out.”</p>
<p>Earlier this month, Mercom <a href="https://mercomindia.com/after-global-supply-chain-woes-domestic-supply-hits-solar-developers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the Indian government’s step to limit the dependence on China and promote local manufacturing of solar modules has led to a shortage of modules.</p>

Imposing Import Tariffs Could Hamper Deployment of Solar Energy: Study

					</table><p>France-based energy firm <a href="https://www.engie.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ENGIE</a> has acquired a 6 GW portfolio of solar, paired storage, and standalone battery storage capacity from <a href="https://belltownpower.com/us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Belltown Power</a> to add to its development pipeline in the U.S.</p>
<p>These projects consist of approximately 2.7 GW of solar with 0.7 GW of paired storage and 2.6 GW of standalone battery storage.</p>
<p>The projects are located across the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM), and Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECO).</p>
<p>In North America, ENGIE has 3.9 GW of installed renewable capacity as of June 30, 2022.</p>
<p>Chief Renewables Officer and Head of ENGIE North America Dave Carroll said, &#8220;The mix of solar, paired, and stand-alone storage across a wide set of geographies both complements our existing portfolio as well as provides opportunities for expansion into new areas in the United States. The 3.3 GW of battery storage projects will be a critical enabler of flexibility and supports the balance of the grid to improve its reliability and resilience.&#8221;</p>
<p>Belltown Power specializes in greenfield development of solar photovoltaic and energy storage projects, starting with site identification and navigating interconnection, real estate, permitting, environmental, tax, and all other development items to bring these projects to fruition.</p>
<p>CEO of Belltown Power U.S. Hernan Farace said, &#8220;The ENGIE team is very knowledgeable and has the breadth and depth of expertise to bring these projects into operations. We believe our projects are in excellent hands and look forward to the ribbon-cutting ceremonies at each of these sites.&#8221;</p>
<p>In September this year, ENGIE was one of the four <a href="https://mercomindia.com/blupine-engie-tata-power-upc-winners-guvnls-750-mw-solar-auction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">winners</a> in an auction by a distribution company in India to procure power from 750 MW of grid-connected solar projects with a greenshoe option of an additional capacity of up to 750 MW.</p>
<p>ENGIE also <a href="https://mercomindia.com/daily-news-wrap-up-pg-procure-power-engies-solar-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> a  power purchase agreement with Procter &amp; Gamble to procure power from its 200 MW Sun Valley Solar project in Hill County, Texas. ENGIE will supply over 530,000 MWh of clean electricity annually once production starts.</p>
