A top government official privy to the deliberations said that the decision to postpone ALMM mandate for a year is because of the steep target of 280 GW by 2030.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/msedcl-225-mw-solar-kusum" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) has invited bids to procure 225 MW of power from decentralized solar projects of 500 kW to 2 MW under component-A </strong></a><strong>o</strong>f the Pradhan Mantri-Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) program. MSEDCL has set a ceiling tariff of ₹3.30 (~$0.040)/kWh. The projects should be commissioned within 12 months of the work order. The last day to submit the bids is April 28, 2023.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/pfc-invites-bids-to-energy-from-rajasthan" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>PFC Consulting Limited has invited bids to build an inter-state transmission system for the evacuation of power from Rajasthan renewable energy zones</strong> </a>on a build, own, operate, and transfer basis. These zones are Ph-IV (Part- 1) (Bikaner Complex): PART-C and PART-D. The last date for the submission of bids is May 8, 2023. Bids will be opened on the same day.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/sael-raises-%E2%82%B913-3-portfolio-via-bond-issue" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>SAEL, an India-based waste-to-energy producer, has raised ₹13.25 Billion (~$161 million) via the sale of rupee bonds, which will mature in 2033.</strong></a> India Infradebt, Aseem Infrastructure Finance, TATA Cleantech Capital, and Kotak Infrastructure Debt Fund subscribed to the bonds. SAEL’s green energy initiatives will benefit from the proceeds of the long-term, secured, unlisted, rated, redeemable, non-convertible debt securities. The global analytical company Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited rated the bonds’ AA’.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/gujarat-additional-surcharge-open-access-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved an additional surcharge of ₹0.76 (~$0.0092)/ kWh</strong></a>, which will apply to consumers availing power through open access from April 1, 2023, to September 30, 2023 period. The Commission arrived at the levy through the revised methodology for calculating the additional surcharge.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/uks-multi-billion-pound-energy-security" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Britain has unveiled a series of measures to strengthen the country’s long-term energy security and independence, reduce household bills for the long term, and achieve net zero.</strong></a> The measures include a commitment to Carbon Capture Usage and Storage, investment in the offshore wind industry, new green hydrogen production projects, the announcement of Great British Nuclear, planning process reform, expanding energy efficiency support, and investment in electric vehicle charging points.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/mnre-renewable-energy-bidding-trajectory" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>The Ministry of New &amp; Renewable Energy will issue renewable project bids worth 50 GW annually for the financial years 2024-28</strong>,</a> which includes at least 10 GW will be wind tenders. Industry stakeholders, especially developers, have been demanding a predictable bidding trajectory, which they have argued would help them prepare better for competitive bids. Additionally, it would also help iron out grid connectivity issues and provide more visibility and certainty for upcoming tenders, besides attracting more international capital.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/norwayoffshore-wind-1-5-gw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Norway has invited bids for offshore wind projects worth at least 1.5 GW, which can be expanded by another 2.25 GW depending on the conclusion of the ongoing survey.</a></strong> The Norwegian government said that the announcement of bids was the first big step towards its ambition of allocating areas for 30 GW offshore wind capacity by 2040.</p>

					</table><p>The Indian Institute of Science&#8217;s (<a href="https://iisc.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IISc</a>) Department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics (IAP) has created an ultramicro supercapacitor that can store a large amount of electric charge despite its small size.</p>
<p>Unlike batteries, capacitors are unable to discharge energy continuously, making them unsuitable for powering devices such as mobile phones.</p>
<p>However, supercapacitors offer the benefits of both batteries and capacitors as they have the capability to both store and release large amounts of energy, making them highly sought after for advanced electronic devices.</p>
<p>The researchers intend to investigate whether replacing MoS2 with other materials can further increase the capacitance of their supercapacitor.</p>
<p>They said their fully functional supercapacitor can be integrated into energy-storage devices through on-chip integration, such as electric car batteries or miniaturized systems.</p>
<p>They plan to apply for a patent for the supercapacitor.</p>
<p>This new supercapacitor is smaller and more condensed than previous models. It can be utilized in consumer electronic devices, electric vehicles, streetlights, and medical devices.</p>
<p>In the study, which has been published in <em>ACS Energy Letters</em>, the researchers said they utilized Field Effect Transistors (FETs) as charge collectors for their supercapacitor instead of the metallic electrodes that are commonly used in traditional capacitors.</p>
<p>According to Abha Misra, Professor at IAP and corresponding author of the study, &#8220;Using FET as an electrode for supercapacitors is something new for tuning charge in a capacitor.&#8221;</p>
<p>After manufacturing the supercapacitor, the researchers measured its electrochemical capacitance or charge-holding capacity by applying various voltages.</p>
<p>Their findings showed that the capacitance increased by 3000% under specific conditions, which was significantly higher than the 18% increase observed in a capacitor containing only MoS2 without graphene under the same conditions.</p>
<p>Currently, batteries are the primary power source for many devices. But batteries have a limited lifespan as they gradually lose their capacity to store charge over time. Capacitors, on the other hand, can store electric charge for much longer periods due to their design.</p>
<p>For instance, a capacitor operating at 5 volts will maintain the same voltage even after 10 years.</p>
<p>Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) have <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/researchers-find-solar-pv-storage-systems" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed</a> a solution that combines power from renewable sources with electricity from the public grid and uses batteries to compensate for fluctuations.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, researchers at the Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, China, and Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan, <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/crab-shells-could-power-rechargeable-batteries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> to upcycle crab shells into porous, carbon-filled materials with various uses, including using the crab carbon to create anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.</p>

IISc Researchers Develop Supercapacitor for Advanced Energy Storage Devices

					</table><p>A research team from the <a href="https://iisc.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian Institute of Science</a>, Bengaluru, has found a way to extract green hydrogen from biomass, a renewable energy source.</p>
<p>India uses nearly 5 million tons of hydrogen for various processes in different sectors, and the hydrogen market is expected to grow substantially in the coming years. But most of the hydrogen used comes from fossil fuels and is extracted through a steam methane reforming route.</p>
<p>The IISc team was led by S Dasappa, Professor at the Centre for Sustainable Technologies and Chair of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research.</p>
<p>In the first step, biomass is converted into syngas – a hydrogen-rich fuel gas mixture – in a novel reactor using oxygen and steam. In the second step, pure hydrogen is generated from syngas using an indigenously developed low-pressure gas separation unit.</p>
<p>The highly efficient process, which is also carbon-negative, produces 100 g of hydrogen from 1 kg of biomass even though only 60 g of hydrogen is present in 1 kg of biomass. In this process, steam, which also contains hydrogen, participates in both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions.</p>
<p>&#8220;This indigenous technology is a step towards achieving the goal of Prime Minister&#8217;s Atmanirbhar Bharat and the National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap, an initiative of the Government of India that aims to promote the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel. The same platform can be used for methanol and ethanol production too,&#8221; said Dasappa.</p>
<p>The by-products generated from this process &#8212; solid carbon serves as a carbon sink, and carbon dioxide is used in other value-added products. Green hydrogen could also be used in the steel industry to decarbonize steel, in agriculture to manufacture green fertilizers, and in many sectors currently using hydrogen produced from fossil fuels.</p>
<p>In line with the National Hydrogen Mission launched last year, the Ministry of Power <a href="https://mercomindia.com/new-green-hydrogen-policy-step-net-zero-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a &#8216;Green Hydrogen Policy&#8217; to help India meet the production target of 5 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030 and the related development of renewable energy capacity.</p>
<p>In April, India&#8217;s only, pure green hydrogen pilot plant that generates green hydrogen from a solar plant was <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-first-pure-green-hydrogen-pilot-assam/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">installed</a> in Assam with a production capacity of 10 kg per day.</p>
